Welcome to the 2023 season!
Dear Runners and Parents,
We are very excited for this season and can't wait to see everyone work hard and have fun!
For those who are new to Cross Country:
Cross country (XC/CC) is a sport in which student athletes train to compete in races typically through woods, fields, creeks, on gravel & dirt paths and around sports fields. These races are 2 miles in length for middle schoolers and 3.1 miles for high schoolers. XC races are called 'meets', 'invites' or 'invitationals' and are almost always held on Saturdays. For middle schoolers, there are about 7 meets per cross country season. These competitions often include 15 or more teams in the same race. We race (and practice) in most conditions; hot & cold, wet & dry . . . but not in thunder and lightning.

*Running Shoes: An adequate pair of RUNNING shoes MUST be used. Without proper shoes, runners will not be permitted to practice. Hiking shoes, cleats, cross trainers or any other type of athletic shoes will not do. If you have a pair of running shoes, but have used them for another season, then it’s time for a new pair. We’ll be logging a lot of miles this season, so starting off with a new pair is essential! Walking around for a few days in a new pair of shoes to break them in is encouraged prior to running in them.
*Spikes - Optional: Cross Country racing shoes/spikes are not mandatory but can help an athlete race faster.
*Water: MANDATORY to bring a water bottle to all practices and meets. Sports drinks such as Gatorade/Powerade are acceptable as well.
*Watch: Basic watches with a stopwatch function are also STRONGLY ENCOURAGED as this will help with timing at practices and meets. GPS watches are not required and not permitted to be used during races.
*Black Running Shorts: Student Athletes will be provided with a uniform top but must provide the bottoms to be worn on picture day and at all meets. The bottoms must be all black, no stripes down the sides or large logos. One small logo is acceptable. Girls will need a plain black sports bra.
*Communication: *This website - to stay current throughout the year. Home to practice policies, meet information, forms and more!
*ParentSquare - used to send out weekly news letter and as needed for reminders and announcements regarding practice changes or cancellation due to weather conditions, bus depart and return times, etc.
*Transportation: Buses will transport athletes to/from all meets as a team. Athletes are required to ride the bus unless they have previously turned in a completed alternate transportation request form. These waivers will need to be signed by the student, parent/guardian and the athletic director BEFORE being turned into coaching staff. Buses for meets will always leave from and return to Watts Middle School. Athletes/parents/guardians will be responsible for transportation to/from practices. We understand that not only are student athletes busy people, but parents are busy as well. As such, we do our very best to finish practice and have students ready for pick-up at the scheduled time and greatly appreciate their rides to be on time for pick-up after practices/meets.
